The Lake Burgsee in Schwerin

The Lake Burgsee in Schwerin

It was a Silvestr night, midnight was over and together with it most of a celebrations. The lake was mirroring the city lights in its own form of firework. Magnificent light show on the water, welcoming the start of a new year.

This picture turned out to be a great success at social media. However, painting it was rather simple, maybe also because this time I had relatively clear picture what do I want to achieve.

I started with my favorite form of underpainting – the red one. The key is to let it properly dry, so I left two weeks for the picture to rest before continuing with next layers. The rest was fairly simple – once the initial layer is dry, glazing over makes a unique colour tones while preserving the pattern from the underpainting. I made my way through the sky and trees until I had only lights left. I purposefully left some small parts of underpainting untouched – for effect.

The lights of the lake were only places of the picture where I used a thicker paint instead of the thin layers. This is also why they stand out of picture in little bit of a 3D effect.

I hope you enjoy this emotional piece as much as I enjoy my favorite song from In Extremo!
